Two collectors. One very big Hot Wheels problem.
What started with a dad, a car-mad kid and a rapidly growing Hot Wheels collection somehow became Matt's Diecast Shop.
How it started.
I've loved diecast cars for as long as I can remember. Then Joey came along — and it turns out the obsession might be hereditary.
At eight years old, he's already built a Hot Wheels collection of well over 1,000 cars. He loves cars just as much as I do, and somewhere along the way, helping him build his collection pulled me straight back into collecting too.
Like most collections, ours started producing duplicates. Then more duplicates. Then boxes of extras.
Eventually we realised those cars could do something better than sit in storage: they could help other collectors find the cars they were missing.
And that's really where Matt's Diecast Shop started.
Collecting shouldn't be this difficult.
The more involved we became in collecting, the more we realised how difficult it can actually be to find the cars you want.
Popular releases disappear almost immediately. Limited stock gets bought up. Prices jump. And before many genuine collectors even know something has been released, it's gone.
And it isn't only adult collectors chasing rare Hot Wheels. Sometimes it's a parent trying to find a particular Disney Pixar car their child has been looking everywhere for.
In collecting, it can sometimes feel like if you're not first, you're last.
We didn't want to build another business around that problem. We wanted to do things differently.
Collectors first.
Shop second.
That's still how we run Matt's Diecast Shop today.
We collect the cars we actually want. We hunt for releases ourselves. We sometimes buy new stock in bulk, but we're not interested in filling a warehouse with anything that might make a quick profit.
Extras, duplicates and stock we've been able to source make their way onto the site, where hopefully they end up with somebody who has genuinely been looking for them.
Sometimes that's a serious collector chasing a Treasure Hunt. Sometimes it's somebody trying to finish a set. And sometimes it's a parent looking for the one car their child has been asking for.
That's the bit we actually enjoy.
This was never meant to be just another shop.
Matt's Diecast Shop wasn't dreamed up in a boardroom. It grew out of two people who genuinely love cars, collecting them, hunting for them and probably owning far more of them than either of us needs.
We're still collectors. We're still hunting. Joey's collection is still growing at an alarming rate.
The shop just means we get to help a few other collectors along the way.
